Backpack to Tipperary Lake & Surprise Lake in the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area
Saturday - Sunday 8/6-8/7. This will be a not-too-long, but moderately intense hike. I got the plan from REI's ORIC: Tipperary & Surprise Lakes Loop
. It says around 9 miles total, though in my experience these estimates tend to be low. The big thing to note is a 2,000 ft elevation gain in the first 3 miles
. That's nothing to scoff at with a full pack on.Saturday:
We'll meet at Wooly Mammoth lot in Golden at 7a and drive to Eaglesmere Trailhead, about halfway between Silverthorne and Kremmling off US40. If you'd prefer to meet us at the trailhead, we should be boots on the trail around 9a. Even though we'll only do about 5-6 miles, I'd like to get a solid morning start and go at a leisurely pace, taking in the views. We'll do the loop in the opposite direction indicated in the link, taking a lunch break at Surprise Lake before setting up camp above Tipperary Lake. Hopefully get to camp pretty early and relax and check out the lake if possible.
Hike out the last 4-5 miles (mostly downhill) and be back to Golden reasonably early (but not rushed).
As I mentioned, moderately intense, so if you're coming, be prepared. Know your boots and pack. We won't be moving fast, but we will be moving.Dogs:
Kristen and I will be bringing Kona, who is friendly with people, but tends to be pretty aggressive towards other dogs. If you're looking to bring your dog, this may not be the best plan to join.
Bring all the usual Colorado backpacking gear. Obviously plenty of water, warm clothes, rain gear, headlamp, etc. YOU SHOULD BE SELF-SUFFICIENT
, mostly. Below is a list of gear that I'll have and make available to others. Feel free to post if you want to offer something to the group (spot in tent?). If it's not on this list, don't expect someone to have it unless you arrange it.
Water PurifierStove and pot for boiling water
Booze, if you feel it's worth the weight (it is)Fun camp activities?Food:
Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner, Sunday breakfast, lunch, and plenty of snacks for on the trail and at camp. Same deal as gear, don't expect anyone to have extra.
I apologize for hounding on the be prepared thing, but one unprepared person can ruin the trip for everyone. Just have your shit together and this trip will be a ton of fun.
Let me know if you have any questions!
