This is an organization I've been involved with and it is in need of a few volunteers! We are fortunate enough to get outside and be awesome . . . let's spread the love and help others do the same!

What is SOS outreach?

It is a youth development non-profit using year-round, outdoor sports to engage underserved students in long-term mentor based relationships. It's an awesome group and is a ton of fun getting out with the kids for a few days.

What they need:

People excited about working with underserved youth and getting outside! For this winter, they need people who are willing to get out with the kids while they learn how to snowboard. You DO NOT need to know how to ski or snowboard, you can learn with them. I've had peers who ski and decide to jump on snowboards along with the kids (this is great because it gives the kids a bit of additional confidence and lowers their inhibitions about trying it out).

Time commitment: There are a few different options available, ranging from one day out on the slopes with the kids, or full-on Sherpa Mentor. I choose to do the Learn-To-Ride Program with kids, in which you dedicate 5 days on the mountain with the same group of kids. It's awesome to see the progress and confidence they develop from day one to day 5.

There is a meeting on November 20th from 6-8 at the Daniel's Fund (Building) in Denver. If you have questions, send me a message. Here's the website for SOS Outreach as well: http://sosoutreach.org/

- UPDATE - SOS asks that volunteers have at least a basic knowledge of skiing/boarding to join on. This ultimately helps make the experience more valuable for the kids as you can devote 100% of your attention to the kids, as opposed to 50% on them, and 50% on not crashing your way down the mountain :) That being said, volunteers certainly don't need to be experts, but you should be able to make it down a green run comfortably. And to answer an earlier question: Volunteers need to have your own pass/equipment - unfortunately, SOS can't supply for these programs. They have volunteer opportunities for 1-2 day programs at Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Breck, and 5-day programs at Keystone, Breck, Copper, A-Basin, and Eldora.
